Saganne Charles, son of peasants, is a ranker. In
1911, a young lieutenant, tired of garrison life,
he left France for the great adventure Saharan
Africa. He falls in love with the beautiful young
Madeleine de Saint-Ilette. Then, under the command
of Colonel Dubreuilh, he covered himself with
glory in the southern Sahara. Sent to Paris on a
mission, he has a brief affair with the novelist
Louise Tissot. Having pacified the desert, he
married Madeleine. Returning to France, he died
shortly afterwards in the trenches during the war
14-18. In 1922, Colonel Dubreuilh gives its name
to a fort in the desert.
